Lighthouse Library Mystery Book 2

The author of By Book or By Crook returns to the Outer Banks and the Lighthouse Library, where Lucy Richardson must shed light on a shocking murder…

Lucy has finally found her bliss as a librarian and resident of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. She loves walking on the beach, passing her evenings with the local book club, bonding with the library cat, Charles, and enjoying the attention of not one, but TWO eligible men. But then her socialite mother, Suzanne, unexpectedly drops in, determined to move Lucy back to Boston—and reunite her with her ex-fiancé.

To make matters worse, Suzanne picks a very public fight at the local hotel with her former classmate Karen Kivas. So, when Karen turns up dead outside the library the next morning, Suzanne is immediately at the top of the suspect list. Now Lucy must hunt down a dangerous killer—before the authorities throw the book at her poor mother…

My Review:

I don’t quite know what to say about this book. It’s well written, the mystery kept me guessing until the very end, and Charles the library cat is awesome. There’s just something about this book that just didn’t work for me. Lucy’s character is far too juvenile to be a thirty-year-old woman and the story just felt heavy and plodding. I wasn’t swept away by the whimsy. Which is really odd. A librarian, a cat and a TARDIS-like library should be reading gold for me. I wonder if it’s because the characters that get the most page time spend that time complaining. It’s a little tough to find the joy when faced with so much negativity. Even though the amount I seem to have to complain would suggest a lower rating, the answers in the end were nothing like what I was expecting, so that earns the book a bonus star. I’m also very grateful that the love triangle aspect of the story is very low key. It’s one of my least favorite themes in a story or series. So, while I don’t care for it, I also don’t hate the way it’s being handled here. The way this ends, it does make me curious to know more about these characters. I read a borrowed copy of this book.
